The history of research works on Kotelnich locality

The world of ancient animals was huge and various. It was interested by people at all times. Long time ago people concerned unquestionable tracks of once having lived on the Earth prehistoric life. Since then they have been trying to find explanations for their incomprehensible finds: shells of long ago died out mollusks, bones of unknown animals, imprints of non-existent plants...

Research works on the Kotelnich locality

Annual field research of the Kotelnich Palaeontological Museum at the Kotelnich locality allow the recovery of skeletal remains of ancient animals and permit their placement within the proper geological context. Since 1992 this work has been international one as palaeontologists and geologists from all over the world participate.

Overview of sediments

The Kotelnich terrestrial fossil locality is part of the Russian Tatarian Stage of the Upper Permian. Fossil tetrapods, fish, palyno-flora, macro-flora and invertebrates have been discovered along the western bank of the Vyatka River south of Kotelnich.

The Role of Water in the Formation of the Locality

During the next stage there was a partial washing over and reworking of previously deposited rocks. Strong water streams came from the Urals, eroding deep channels (tens meters deep and 100-200 meters across) in the clay sediments, developing a ramified river system. The modern river is doing much the same thing, cutting a deep valley in the Permian sediments, creating a 60 meter high precipice. In the bottom part of these streams large fragments of rock were deposited, followed by large grainy sandstones, and where the stream lost its energy and speed, silt. There was also the formation of precipitates of hydro-carbonate of calcium, followed by the formation of thick grey calcarious sandstones. About five such fossil river beds are preserved on the territory of locality.

Taphonomy of Kotelnich locality

Running from north to south, the Vyatka river erodes the [west radical] bank near Kotelnich. This locality is comprised by rocks of Tatarian Stage of the Upper Permian, on the boundary of the Mesozoic Era. The formation of the supercontinent Pangea had finished; the climate on the Earth was almost everywhere warm and dry, which gave numerous opportunities for the appearance of many new terrestrial forms of life.
